Every move is different, but this partial list will help you along your way to a successful move. The Printer Friendly Version provides blank spaces at the bottom of each category to write in extras that you think of.

ONE MONTH BEFORE MOVING

• Start getting estimates on moving expenses, whether you plan on using a Moving Company, or are using a Rental Truck.
• Pick up your Health Records: Medical, Dental, Shot Records, Optometrist, etc.
• School Records
• Financial/Legal Records
• Veterinarian Records
• Keep the move simple: Now is a good time to consider things in your home that may not be worth bringing -- consider leaving them with friends, donating to charity, or have a Garage Sale
• Begin to try to use up perishable foods, etc. that aren't worth packing
• Obtain packing supplies, including: Boxes, Packing Tape, Newspaper & Markers
• Start packing and labeling items you know you won't need
• Obtain a Change of Address Kit from the Post Office
• Give your new address to:
• Banks
• Credit Card Companies
• Magazines you subscribe to
• Insurance Companies
• Your employer (for tax information forwarding)
• Landlord (if deposits will be forwarded)
• Cancel newspaper delivery

THREE WEEKS BEFORE MOVING

• Contact your children's new schools and make any necessary arrangements
• Open (or transfer) a bank account in your new town.
• Make arrangements for connection of utilities at your new home
• Have your vehicles serviced, as necessary
• Make arrangements for auto registration & insurance, as necessary
• Make arrangements with a Moving Company, as necessary

TWO WEEKS BEFORE MOVING

• Make arrangements to close (or transfer) your old bank account
• Dispose of poisons, flammables and corrosives
• Make arrangements for disconnection of utilities at your old home
• Contact newspaper in old town to cancel subscription
• Arrange for childcare on Moving Day, as necessary
• Library Books returned?
• Other borrowed items returned?
• Are you continuing to pack and label items you won't need until after the move?

ONE WEEK BEFORE MOVING

• Clear out Safety Deposit Boxes
• Pick up Traveler's Checks, as necessary
• Begin to plan meals around cleaning out the refrigerator and pantry
• Use or drain fuel/oil from lawn mower, trimmer, etc.
• Ensure you have adequate supplies of Prescription Medications
• Continue packing and labeling what you can that is not needed
• Do your family and friends have your new address and phone number?

DAY BEFORE MOVING

• Defrost and clean out your refrigerator
• Clean other appliances as necessary
• If staying in a hotel while traveling, pack a single small bag or suitcase, containing 1 change of clothes, etc., for each person (instead of carrying several bags into room)
• Pack your old Phone Book for reference as necessary
• Touch base with everyone who is supposed to help on Moving Day

MOVING DAY

• Take down curtains and curtain rods
• Strip beds
• Pack/Load remaining items as necessary
• Make one last, thorough sweep of house and property for forgotten items
• Make sure doors and windows are locked
• Ensure Moving Company has correct address (and your cellphone number)
• Using a road map, go over the best route to your new home with others assisting you in moving

AFTER MOVING

• Check Fire Extinguishers, Smoke Alarms, Carbon Monoxide Detectors
• Ensure all windows and doors lock properly
• Obtain new Safety Deposit Box
• Contact newspaper to arrange subscription
• Register to vote
